Up until today, many were still wondering how the Wii U will manage achievements and how will it be different from Xbox and PSN’s trophy system. Well, there’s no need to think about that anymore. Scribble Naughts Unlimited creative director made a recent post on NeoGaf stating that the Wii U will not have any universal achievement/trophy system and it will be up to the developer to include them in their own game.
There are no Wii U accomplishments that are system wide. They are up to the developers to include or not include. Scribblenauts Unlimited loosely has them in the form of “Global Starite Shards” which is like a giant checklist of global things to spawn and do in the game that aren’t area specific.
This sort system has already been seen on the Wii with games likes Super Smash Brothers Brawl and Metroid Prime 3 having their own sort of “achievement/reward system”. I personally never found achievements or trophies to be anything special and really adds nothing to the game experience–especially those easy to unlock achievements found in Gears of War and Halo. The problem is–and while I may disagree–this will can be a major low blow to gamers who love sharing their gaming achievements with friends. Time will tell whether Nintendo will eventually include one down the line.
